Volunteering

At FOFAS, our most important resource is our volunteers. Without them, we could not do anything! We are in great need of new volunteers to help us carry on our important mission. If you love animals, especially dogs and/or cats; and you want to help us continue to fulfill our mission, please call or visit us. Don't worry if you are inexperienced. We have orientations and on-the-job training! Volunteering doesn't necessarily mean actually being at the shelter itself. Many of our volunteers make a big difference for the animals by donating their time and special skills to committees and projects that benefit the shelter.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Barbara at 510-562-0200 or email her at barbsfelines@aol.com.

Please note: VOLUNTEERS MUST BE 18 YEARS OF AGE AND OVER. MINORS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO HANDLE THE ANIMALS. Contact Barbara as listed above for information about orientation.

Volunteer Activities

Office
The office is open on a volunteer basis from 12-4 pm daily (Closed on holidays). Volunteers are needed to answer phone calls, issue spay/neuter certificates, socialize cats, and greet the general public. Volunteers are also needed to feed the cats & clean the office in am or pm shifts.

Fostering
Friends of Fairmont pulls animals out of the Fairmont Shelter and fosters them within our homes until permanent homes can be found for them. Working with the foster coordinator, foster homes provide a stable situation for the animal waiting to be adopted. Fofas pays for all expenses (food, medical attention, etc.) while the animal is in foster

Shelter
Morning Cat Feeders
If you enjoy the company of cats, here's a great way to start the day. We currently have several a.m. shifts open to feed cats in the volunteer office. You will be greeted with head rubs and quiet meows of appreciation as soon as cats hear the sound of the can opener! In addition to feeding, you would provide a clean litter box and administer any needed medication. Can you spare about 90 minutes one morning a week for the felines? Orientation to FoFAS, as well as specific training in shelter cat feeding will be cheerfully provided.

Cat and Kitten Fosters
Spring and Summer are a busy time for the shelter. Kitten season is upon us and we need people to help care for and socialize the kittens to get them ready for adoption.

Cat Photographers
Love animals? Love photography? Why not combine the two? FOFAS is looking for someone to take pictures and write bios of incoming cats for our website. Flexible schedule, requiring approximately 2-4 hours a week.

Dog Photographer
If you enjoy the antics of doggies hamming it up for the camera, here's a great way to spend a few hours every other Sunday. Dog photographers work with another (experienced!) volunteer to photograph incoming dogs for publicity/web site posting, then crop and/or edit the photos at home and email them to other volunteers for posting.

Afternoon Dog Feeders
Needed for care of dogs and pups in shelter from around 4 to 5:30 p.m. one afternoon per week. In addition to giving dog biscuits, water and blankets to all dogs, there are "special needs" pups and dogs who require a second daily feeding. You will love to see the tails wagging with happiness when you arrive!

Dog Walkers
Get some exercise and make a dog's day. We need more dog walkers to help us get our canine friends out of their cages.

Fundraising
Fofas hosts frequent activities which require assistance from volunteers at all levels (phone calls, booth work, baking for bake sales, working yard sales, etc.). Volunteers are notified via phone of the next upcoming event and asked to participate on an as needed basis.
