      Dogs Needing Homes

Name: "Saltador de Altura"
Sex: Male (neutered)
Breed: Chihuahua mix
Size: Small

Bio:
Here we have "Saltador de Altura." Yes, his name is bigger than he is. It means "high jumper," and he is. He's a very handsome and very little guy! He's new to his foster home, but so far we know he's smart and loves to please. That's a great combination and should make everything else easy-peasy.

"Saltador" (or "Sal" for short) loves to run around with his canine housemates and is very, very playful. As small as he is, he would do best in a home without small children.

"Sal" is already fixed and current on his vaccinations. He's ~1 year old and only 4-1/2 pounds!

Name: "Mario"
Sex: Male (neutered)
Breed: Manchester Terrier
Size: Small

Bio:
You couldn't ask for a sweeter Manchester Terrier. "Mario" (formerly known as "Tank") has mellowed with age, although he is still spirited and swaggers with the best of them. He was very outgoing and friendly toward the photographer.

As you can see, "Mario" is rather portly, so a certain amount of exercise will need to be fit into his daily routine. He is a good little walker, but won't need as vigorous exercise as a youngster would.

Now that he's in foster care, we've found just how full of personality he is. He keeps his foster family laughing all the time with the looks on his face and his little strut when he walks. He's a very curious dog. He loves to snuggle by your side or under a blanket. He has quite a bit of energy, but it doesn't make him high maintenance. It's very easy to fall in love with him. ... He has great "entertainment value."

"Mario" had what appeared to a veterinarian to be chemical burns on his back; he had a medicated bath and was put on antibiotics. They are much improved now.

"Mario" is house-trained. Approximately 20+ lbs (but he's getting thinner). ~7 years old.

Name: "Humphrey"
Sex: Male (neutered)
Breed: Shar-Pei
Size: Med

Bio:
Humphrey is quite a handsome boy who has already had his eyes done and who sports the perfect red-horse coat along with a curled high-set tail. His thick rounded muzzle is black and he does have a bluish-black tongue, though it’s hard to get to his mouth through all of his muzzle. Humphrey is house trained using a dog door and is crate trained.

Humphrey is an independent dog who much prefers hanging out with his humans versus other animals. Humphrey does shed slightly and he does drool on occasion. Humphrey rides well in the car and is a breeze to take for a walk. He enjoys running in the yard while throwing his stuffed toys in the air, then retrieving them when they hit the ground.

This is a courtesy listing. This animal is in a private (not a FoFAS) foster home. If you are interested in “Humphrey," please contact Paige at (510) 816-0954, email paigeforce@aol.com or...

Name: Angus
Sex: Male (neutered)
Breed: Terrier mix
Size: Small

Bio:
Angus is a terrier mix, tan with white chest, paws, and tail tip. He is about two years old. His size isn’t apparent in our photos, but he’s a small dog, approximately 12 pounds.

Angus is a sweet, very affectionate, well-behaved dog with a high energy level. He loves to play and play and he’s highly intelligent. We therefore think he will be at his best in a home with at least one other dog. He gets along well with other dogs of all sizes and he ignores cats. He also seems okay with children.

Angus LOVES walks, rides in the car, playing fetch, and playing hide-and-seek beneath covers. But he also loves his quiet time when he can sit in your lap or nap in a sunny spot or enjoy a good rawhide chew while his human reads a book. He is crate-trained and house-trained and knows how to use a pet door. Despite his high energy level, Angus rarely barks unless the house is approached by a stranger, and even then, it depends on the stranger. Angus chases squirrels and will keep your garden squirrel-free, but if you enjoy attracting squirrels to your yard, Angus will foil your plans in that regard.

Angus is neutered and has been vaccinated against rabies and bordetella. He is just beginning to learn a few commands, such as sit, stay, etc., and his foster guardian is very impressed with how quickly he learns new things. Angus is an attentive, sensitive dog who is looking for a human/canine family that will be buoyed by his high spirits.

Name: Isabel
Sex: Female
Breed: Pit bull terrier
Size: Lrg

Bio:
Isabel is a lovely, happy, energetic pit bull terrier PUPPY. Her birthday is in April and she is currently about 30 lbs, but she will be a big girl when she grows up. She enjoys her daily walks, her chew toys, playing with the other dogs and cats in her foster home and running in her yard. Isabel is very social and wants to greet everyone she meets (although the photographer seems to have subdued her zest for life just a bit). She is one of those dogs who likes to watch TV with you (and isn’t fussy about what program is on). She is working on housebreaking and does have lapses when she is too busy to stop what she is doing to go outside. She is also being crate trained. Isabel is currently enrolled in puppy classes and we would want to see her continue with training to give her the best chance for success in her future home.

Isabel will be spayed within two weeks and will receive her remaining DHPP shot and rabies vaccine. She will be available for adoption on approximately August 20.

Name: Fred
Sex: Male (neutered)
Breed: Dachshund mix
Size: Small

Bio:
Fred and Ginger, a pair of doxie mixes (there may be a little Boston terrier in their heritage), were pulled from Fairmont Animal Shelter just before it closed and are living together in a FoFAS foster home. Fred and Ginger are probably brother and sister and are very bonded to each other. We find it unthinkable to separate these two so we would like to find them a home together.

Fred is the dashing gentleman in black and white. (Think Astaire-in-tuxedo.) Fred is the more outgoing of the two and the first to hop in your lap as soon as you sit down. Both dogs are lap sitters and can happily occupy (even together) a willing lap for an hour at a time. Fred will conquer obstacles in order to be close to his people. He loves their company so much that he can be a bit of an escape artist and has managed to climb out of x-pens and wriggle under picket fences to get to his human pals.

Both dogs are gentle and quiet (except for little growls from Fred if a new dog gets too "in his face"), love to go on walks, and are super easy to manage. They will probably do best in a home in which their humans are with them a lot. They are okay with gentle older children and are house-trained.

Both were scared and withdrawn when they first came to Fairmont Animal Shelter, but they have now come out of their shells quite a bit and are charming everyone they meet. Time spent with Fred or Ginger in your lap, sharing their quiet sense of calm while they gaze at you with their sweet faces, is like time spent in a zen garden. Everyone falls under the spell of their peaceful demeanors.

Ginger and Fred have bonded quickly to the human friends they have made while in foster care and will surely become very close to their forever guardians as well. If a ready-made doggie family suits your situation, we urge you to consider adopting Ginger and Fred.

Name: "Lola"
Sex: Female (spayed)
Breed: Poodle
Size: S-M

Bio:
Lola is a shy, gentle dog who is best described as a little lady. She has a very sweet disposition. She is between 1 - 2 years old, weighs about 20 pounds and appears to be house broken. She is spayed and has had her shots. She feels intimidated when placed in a new environment, and finds comfort in the lap of anyone who is willing to give her a little love. Once she adjusts, she continues to be just as loving, but feels more confident and becomes more playful and fun. Lola is social with children and most other dogs. She tends to chase cats. Lola has a mid-level energy level and would be happy in a home that matches her gentle nature. Lola is crate trained.

Lola arrived at the Fairmont shelter with Cody (see Cody’s bio here). The dogs are very close. We don’t know if they are siblings but it seems likely. It’s not necessary that they be adopted as a pair, but if you are looking for a pair, please consider Cody too.

Name: "Cody"
Sex: Male
Breed: Poodle
Size: S-M

Bio:
Cody is a healthy, playful, energetic poodle. He is between 1 - 2 years old, weighs about 20 pounds and appears to be house broken. He is neutered and has had his shots. Although he can be very shy in a new environment, he comes out of his shell once comfortable and becomes very loving and playful. He behaves well with children and most dogs. An introduction may be required for homes with other dogs to make sure he gets along with them. He tends to chase cats. He has successfully learned tricks and has done an amazing job learning to do home-made agility courses. Cody is a lot of fun and would be happy in an active home with children. He needs a secure backyard with adequate fencing. Cody is crate trained.

Ginger and Fred are probably brother and sister and are very bonded to each other. We find it unthinkable to separate these two so we would like to find them a home together.

Ginger’s name coincidentally describes the color of her coat. Both dogs are gentle and quiet and extremely affectionate, but Ginger is the more independent member of the doxie team and has an intrepid side. She loves to explore and often leads the way when out on leash with Fred. These two love walking together with their humans on streets or hiking trails and even enjoy jogging with their current foster guardian. They travel well in the car and would rather go with you than be left behind.

Both were scared and withdrawn when they first came to Fairmont Animal Shelter, but they have thoroughly come out of their shells and are charming everyone they meet. Both dogs happily greet strangers and offer affection. Time spent with Fred or Ginger in your lap, sharing their quiet sense of calm while they gaze at you with their sweet faces, is like time spent in a Zen garden. Name: Pepper
Sex: Female (spayed)
Breed: Pti mix
Size: Med

Bio:
Pepper is an adorable, brindle pit mix with an incredibly sweet disposition and face. She's housebroken and is doing a great job at learning basic commands. She's extremely playful, as most adolescent dogs are, but also enjoys a good bit of down time napping next to her foster parents. She loves to snuggle and at times she seems to think she's a lap dog.

Pepper walks very well on a leash. Although she may get a bit excited when walking past another dog, she will not pull and is easily reminded to continue walking. If you enjoy exercising with your pet, Pepper is your girl. She loves to jog (even if you are a slow runner, she stays at your pace) and can run along side a bike with ease.

She is a social girl who enjoys daily trips to the dog park. She plays well with all types of dogs (and their owners….she loves people!) Although Pepper does not live with children, she has been very friendly and gentle with all the little ones who ask to pet her.

Pepper is ~ 9 months old and 41 lbs.

Name: Pandora
Sex: Female (spayed)
Breed: Pit Bull Terrier
Size: Lrg

Bio:
Sweet, stoic Pandora seems relieved to be safe. Pandora was abandoned in a backyard and was brought to the shelter by a concerned neighbor. She must be glad to have a roof over her head, a bed and blanket to sleep on, food and water, and walks with volunteers who think she is pretty special. What she needs now is a loving, permanent home.

Pandora is a quiet, docile girl who will tug at your heartstrings. A good walker, she forges ahead but will come back to you if you stop and call her. She seems to be very house-trained and OK with other dogs (but not cats).

Shelters are filling up constantly in this time of economic crisis. If you have a soft spot for lady pits of "a certain age" and have thought of rescuing one, now is the time to consider bringing Pandora into your life. Approximately 50 lbs. ~7 years old. She's been spayed, vaccinated and is good to go!

Special Needs:
Pandora has had trouble with (stress related?) hot-spots and is on a special diet for her skin. She may need just the right recipe to keep her comfortable.

Name: "Rufus"
Sex: Male (neutered)
Breed: Shar Pei/Pit Bull Terrier
Size: Lrg

Bio:
To look at his eyes alone, you would never suspect Rufus’s history. Every one he meets gets the shiny, happy, big smile greeting of a dog who loves life, a dog who loves everything. He is one of those conduits of unconditional love that so many dogs are known to be: eager to give love, hungry to receive it, no questions asked.

To look at the rest of him would cause you to marvel at his generosity of heart. Looking like he has been swaddled in barbed wire, Rufus’s face and even the inside of his mouth are covered in small scars, his shoulders and flanks marked by larger ones. The inside of his ears are dark red from spending years left out in the sun. These are the typical marks left on “bait dogs,” gentle dogs who are placed in the blood sport ring as objects for fighting dogs to attack during their training.

That is the condition he was in when FoFAS rescued him from the Fairmont Animal Shelter shortly before it closed. We knew that Rufus’s appearance would prejudice many potential adopters against him. He isn’t beautiful. He looks as scary as a junkyard dog. Why would anyone adopt a dog like him? We knew we were taking a chance with our resources when we decided to rescue Rufus. But “taking a chance” is what animal rescue work is all about. It’s the business of second chances. And if ever a dog deserved a second chance, an opportunity for a better hand in life, it’s Rufus. He was born good, and a bad life has not changed him.

Upon leaving the animal shelter, Rufus was temperament tested and passed with flying colors. He is presently staying at a boarding kennel where he is a favorite among the staff and the other dogs, large and small, who love to play with him. He is persistently happy, an affectionate, goofy, grown-up puppy. He is currently receiving obedience training there. We don’t know yet if Rufus is house trained but he will be going to a boarding house soon where he will receive teaching if he needs it.

Rufus is one of those miracles of resilience. Having suffered great cruelty and abuse, his heart seems too full with love and friendliness to have any room for distrust. Such a heart not only has great love to lavish on his adoptive family, but great lessons to teach all who come in contact with him. We have faith that there is a special home waiting for Rufus, a home where he will be seen and loved as the special dog he is.

Why shouldn’t we?

After all, Rufus has never lost his faith in people.

Name: "Sonia"
Sex: Female (spayed)
Breed: Pit Bull Terrier
Size: Lrg

Bio:
"Sonia" came to the shelter in neglected condition, her ribs sticking out. She was sweet but shy when approached. However, she has been putting on weight and confidence by the day! Now she stands up in her cage ready to greet anyone who walks by.

Volunteer walkers find "Sonia" easy on leash. She has energy to burn off when she first gets out for a walk, but very soon settles into a very comfortable pace. "Sonia" is responsive and interactive, enjoying human attention. She will sit on command and should prove easy to further train.

She recently passed a temperament test with one qualification. The tester felt that because "Sonia" likely came from an abusive and neglectful situation, she will need some more work restoring trust in being handled. For this reason, a dog-experienced guardian is recommended for her, with no children under 16.

Her coat is a shiny, dark chocolate brown. She's approximately 45-50 lbs., ~2 years old.

Name: "Jayden"
Sex: Female (spayed)
Breed: Pit Bull Terrier
Size: Lrg

Bio:
"Jayden" is hoping for adoption by a walking, hiking and/or jogging enthusiast so that she can have fun every day getting plenty of exercise. This cute girl is not big but she is mighty, and loves being taken out of her cage for a run.

"Jayden" scored good marks on temperament tests for being easy on handling. Although she is energetic, she loves to settle down for some hugs and belly rubs. She makes friends quickly with strangers.

Name: Ellie & Sam
Sex: Both (spayed)
Breed: Rottweiler
Size: Lrg

Bio:
"Hi folks! Ellie (pink scarf) and Sam (green scarf) here. We made our way out west where we met in rescue after losing our families, and proved that even Rotties can find the perfect partner later in life. We're both in good health, mature and wise. Sam is a little hard of hearing, but I cover for him and let him know if there's something he missed.

"We would love to stay together. Please consider adopting both of us, and we can all watch sunsets together. I know it may take a special person to adopt us, but we're special, too!"

Ellie has been spayed, is ~8 years old and ~100 lbs. Sam has been neutered, is also ~8 years old and ~75 lbs. ... Is this a cute couple, or WHAT?!
